Hild House

Anne and Keit Luberg in a home story in Saarte Hääl: a home begins with a decision

Anne and Keit spent a long time searching for their home – both on the mainland and on Saaremaa. They visited numerous properties, but none felt quite right. Until the moment they arrived at Matsi farm. “The moment we stepped into the yard, we didn’t want to leave – there’s something different about this place. It just felt like this was the one,” Anne recalls.

The new house at Matsi farm is based on the Pääsküla model by Hild House, adapted to suit the client’s wishes and lifestyle. Flexibility lies at the heart of the Hild House approach: a home shouldn’t be confined to predefined limits, but should evolve together with its future residents. All houses feature load-bearing exterior walls built from Bauroc 375 blocks and non-load-bearing interior walls made of gypsum board on a metal frame. This solution gives homeowners the freedom to shape their home according to their needs – whether that means adding rooms, altering the layout, or choosing personalised interior and exterior finishes, as was done in the Matsi farm project.

“We’ve truly been living here since last summer – we spent the whole summer here with the kids in the old house. Right now, we’re still moving back and forth to the city, as the new house wasn’t quite ready for winter living yet,” Anne says.

Where the old house once stood, a new one is now nearing completion. Keit recalls that the original plan was to renovate the old building – to update it as much as possible and add a new extension. However, a closer inspection revealed that the logs had little future beyond firewood.

“We even found the ‘cornerstone’ of the house – it was inside the old foundation, right in the middle of the building. They say there’s always a gold coin beneath it, but we haven’t found one to this day. The stone did have the initials J and T, along with the year 1932. That sparked an interest in exploring the history of the farm. So far, we’ve learned that the very first owner was named Mart.”

Anne adds that she cannot praise the builders enough – even the locals reportedly watched the construction process like a film or a small miracle. It turns out it’s possible to build this fast.
